Hemp's Superiority Over Other Fabrics

Hemp's Superiority Over Other Fabrics

Unfamiliar with hemp fabric? Or not sure about the benefits of this beautifully soft, ancient fabric and keen to learn more? Perfect, you’re in the right place.

Hemp fabric - still early in its journey to becoming widely adopted is both luxurious and unusual. Potentially the most environmentally friendly, ethical, sustainable and superior textile on the planet..here’s why:

1) Environmentally friendly production

Hemp is 100% natural and organic. Needing no chemicals or pesticides to grow, it purifies the soil and prevents erosion (returning 60-70% of the nutrients it uses). Absorbing more carbon than many single large trees, every tonne of hemp produced removes 1.6 tonnes of CO2 from the air.

2) Uses 5x less water than cotton to make

Hemp requires very little water to grow, causing a minimal footprint. 10,000 litres of water produce 1kg of cotton compared to about 300-500 litres of water to produce 1kg of hemp. Rainfall itself is sufficient.

3) Extremely durable

Hemp is four times more durable than cotton, meaning hemp clothing can last a very long time - all whilst softening with each wash.

4) Breathable

Hemp fabric breathes brilliantly. The hollow structure of the cellulose fibres keeps you cool in the summer as it lets moisture from the body evaporate, as well as insulates in winter to keep us warm.

5) Doesn’t hold onto smell

Hemp has antibacterial properties which prevent things like moulds and mildew and doesn’t hold any form of odour, even when the body is sweaty. Therefore hemp fabric is ideal for warm weather and can be worn several times before washing it.

6) UV-resistant

Hemp fabric is 99.9% effective in blocking UV-A and UV-B rays protecting you from the strong summer glare. Due to its high resistance to ultraviolet light, it will not fade or disintegrate from sunlight as quickly as other natural fibres.

What’s Not to Love?

These amazing characteristics have proven hemp fabric’s superiority, environmentally friendly in almost every way and it’s the future of sustainable fashion.

As the UK's first hemp shirtmaker we create quality shirts that you’ll love for a long time whilst trying to drive change and increasing the awareness of this brilliant fabric.
